Curriculum Overview
British Columbia Curriculum:
The BC curriculum at NFLS BCA is delivered in English by certified teachers from British Columbia. It emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, and student-centered learning. The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, including Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities, and Arts, ensuring that students receive a balanced education. The BC curriculum also integrates the First Peoples Principles of Learning, which focus on holistic and experiential learning, recognizing the importance of indigenous knowledge and perspectives. For more details on the BC curriculum, you can visit the BC Curriculum website.
Chinese Curriculum:
In addition to the BC curriculum, students also follow the Chinese national curriculum. This includes subjects such as Chinese Language and Literature, Politics, History, and Geography. The integration of the Chinese curriculum ensures that students meet the requirements for the Chinese secondary school diploma, providing them with a strong foundation in their native language and cultural studies.
AP Courses and the Capstone Diploma:
BCA offers many different Advanced Placement (AP) courses as electives, providing students with the opportunity to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. These courses are designed to challenge students and prepare them for higher education. The AP courses offered at our school are quite diverse and include Calculus, English Composition, Psychology, Computer Science A, Studio Art, and more. The full course list is available at the bottom of this page.
One of the highlights at BCA is the prestigious BC+ Program. Students who are elect to be a part of the BC+ program take at least 6 AP courses at our school in order to receive the AP Capstone Diploma program. This program includes two mandatory year-long courses: AP Seminar and AP Research.
● AP Seminar: In this foundational course, students explore complex topics through various lenses, developing skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting. The course encourages students to think critically and engage in discussions on real-world issues.
● AP Research: Building on the skills acquired in AP Seminar, this course allows students to conduct in-depth research on a topic of their choice. Students design, plan, and implement a research project, culminating in a 4,000-5,000 word academic paper and a presentation. This course emphasizes independent learning and the application of research methods.
Students who score 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research, along with four additional AP exams, receive the AP Capstone Diploma. This diploma is highly regarded by colleges and universities worldwide, as it demonstrates a student’s ability to undertake rigorous academic work and develop essential skills for success in higher education.
Co-curricular Activities and Community Service:
NFLS BCA places a strong emphasis on the holistic development of students. In addition to academic excellence, the school encourages students to participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities, including sports, arts, and various clubs. These activities help students develop leadership skills, teamwork, and a sense of community.
Moreover, students are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service each school year. This requirement fosters a sense of social responsibility and encourages students to contribute positively to their communities.
Teaching and Learning Environment:
The teaching and learning environment at NFLS BCA is supportive and challenging. The school follows an “English only” policy in classrooms and hallways during school hours to enhance students’ English language proficiency. The faculty comprises experienced and certified teachers who are dedicated to providing high-quality education and supporting students’ academic and personal growth.
Conclusion:
The NFLS BCA curriculum is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education that prepares them for success in both Chinese and international contexts. By offering a dual diploma program, a wide range of AP courses, and the prestigious AP Capstone Diploma program, NFLS BCA ensures that students are well-equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to excel in higher education and beyond. The emphasis on holistic development, community service, and a supportive learning environment further enhances the educational experience, making NFLS BCA a distinguished institution for secondary education in China.
